A lot of people have been numb for a few days following the Lekki massacre but as we gradually begin to get a grip of ourselves reality dawns on us that Lekki massacre was real. The guns meant for protection of the Nigerian citizens was actually turned on citizens who were peacefully exercising their human right to protest regarding issues that threatened their lives, the lives of loved ones and numerous Nigerians. While the wave of the physical protest seems to have died down, the lives of these innocent citizens who committed no crime other than sitting down peacefully waving the Nigerian flag and singing the national anthem can’t be swept under the carpet and life continue as usual. Hence, it was of great shock that the president addressed the nation and made no mention of the massacre. Well his body language spoke a lot and he further reiterated it all with his speech that he really doesn't care.
Nonetheless, we are certain they did not die for nothing because the continuous protest over the last few of days has made one thing clear to all Nigerians that we are stronger united and the divisions sowed amongst us is only driven by the few who have held our country ransom and will continue to sow seeds of division to ensure that we don't collectively demand our rights. However, they ought to know that it is time up and we citizens now know better and will not back down with the demand of building a better Nigeria where the son of a nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody.
Therefore, it will be a complete disservice to the comrades who lost their lives on this struggle that affects us all if we fail to unearth the perpetrators of the massacre. While some persons may try to sell us a lie and continue to deny the military shooting at innocent citizens, the evidence abound. Thus, as citizens who have stood up in protest demanding accountability and transparency, in addition an end to a rogue police unit which decided to perpetrate evil and continually harm the citizens they were meant to protect. It is paramount that the world knows who gave the order and the said person brought to book. Therefore, as citizens of the federal republic of Nigeria we must collectively mount pressure on the National Assembly who are our representatives to call the president and GCFR to order, demanding to know who gave the order and every single person who was part of the team that inflicted mayhem on innocent Nigerians.
It is difficult to understand how it is taking too long to know the team that carried out the massacre when we already know one of the officers who was at the scene in the name of Brigadier General Francis Omata. Although, news has it that he was only there to stop the massacre, he can tell us those who he made to stand down and the commanding officer of the unit should be able to tell us who gave him the order to march on innocent citizens on the said night and so doing the chain of command will lead us to the person who gave the ridiculous and brazen inhuman order. The entire military and government hierarchy involved should be held accountable and brought to book. Thus, while we continue to demand and trend for an end to SARS (#EndSARS) we must also demand and trend justice for the Lekki victims (#Justice4LekkiVictims) alongside who gave the order (#WhoGaveTheOrder) because never again shall we allow impunity to go unpunished in our land.
